Influence of Crack Networks on the Ultrasonic Inspection of a Propagated Defect
نویسنده
چکیده
Thermal fatigue in the mixing zones of pressurized water reactor pipings can potentially lead to the appearance of crack networks. Ultrasonic detection and characterization of a propagated defect in such a network is then a challenge. To study the influence of these secondary crack networks on the ultrasonic inspection of a propagated defect, a mock-up was produced. The innovative manufacturing process must allow, according to the supplier, to propagate cracks with realistic and controlled characteristics, in terms of position, sizing, opening, residual stresses and fracture surface roughness. The selected configuration deals with the inspection of various crack networks of 2 millimetres depth, with various inter-crack spaces (from 1 to 4 millimetres), propagated in a mock-up thickness of 38 millimetres. Two deeper notches were established afterwards in these crack networks. Experimental tests were then carried out and we present and discuss here the various results obtained.

A Novel Method for Ultrasonic Evaluation of Horizontal Defects Using Time-of-Flight Diffraction
Time-of-flight diffraction method (ToFD) is an amplitude-independent sizing method which is based on the measurement of time-of-flight of defect tip diffracted waves. Although ToFD can measure through-wall length of defect accurately, this method is not capable of measuring horizontal defect size. In this paper, a new ToFD method for evaluating horizontal planar defects is presented. The finite...

متن کاملEvaluation of Acoustic Emission Inspection of Oil Tank Floor via Tank Bottom Plates Thickness Measurement
This paper deals with an inspection of defects including corrosion and leakage by Acoustic Emission (AE) in an oil tank floor. In contrast to intrusive methods such as magnetic flux leakage, eddy current or ultrasonic, there is no need to emptying and entering the tank in AE method in order to inspection. In this research AE investigation and AE source location is presented in detail. The resul...

متن کاملA Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing Technique for the Inspection of Nozzle Welds in the Nuclear Industry
Regular, in-service inspection is important to verify the integrity of welded nozzle sections in the nuclear industry. Nozzle sections are susceptible to crack growth due to thermal fatigue and stress corrosion. Early detection of cracks is therefore essential to ensure the continued safe operation of the facility. The aim of this project is to design an inspection system that is capable of red...
